Expected it to be corked like the last one I opened a few years ago. But I was pleasantly surprised, even shocked. Cork broke during opening. Color was deep purple and clear the rim had some orange in it but still no cloudiness. The initial nose had a pronounced funk but it disappeared after swirling and letting it sit for a while. Decanted for two hours. It opened with black fruit, some rosemary and a hint of leather an roasted beef. Full bodied. Palate still had strong tannins and good acidity. Flavors of blackberry an plum, cigar tobacco, thyme and rosemary finishing a bit edgy with tannin and a hint of leather. It was still fresh and not tired. I do like old cabs before they became fruit bombs and this is definitely one that was made for aging.

found this to be very nice, had lithe / elegant body with good acidity, beautiful red fruit, still modestly angular but with attractive fruit to balance... clearly way late in its life and a real joy to contemplate while drinking... I LOVE old cali cabs (pre- the "make 'em big" movement at the turn of the millenium... I would describe this wine as slightly older, tall, slender woman in an elegant but simple, flowing ball gown (hope that isn't inappropriate, but it fit the wine in my view)
