What a beautiful surprise. Depp inky colour, showing no signs of aging. Nose however does with some heathery, herb like high notes and a stewed fruit undertone - not a big nose but interesting and a good teaser. The palate is where this wine is at though with so much more intensity and depth. Still so structured and tannins start to show through in the second glass. Could complain it's a little muddy and chewy but that all adds to it's interest and character.
So glad I had the bottle, and held on to it long enough for it to show its class.

Med to med deep cherry red-nose is a peppery, savoury melange-smells, not surprisingly, like an older CDP-classic sweaty saddle-palate is gamy, sl smoky, with red and black fruits kicking in, and some density still to the tannins, so I'll decant and we'll see what 4 hours does for it-Hugh Johnson says "malted herbs" and I get that.
Four hours later...Rempels were over, we all really liked this-tannins remained a bit dry thoughout, but nice nose and palate-the initial sweaty saddle diminished to a medicinal/spice/tea melange-this had lots of life left and may have been better in 1-3 years. Plenty of character and a sense of place - by no means a run-of-the-mill wine.

Tried this wine in 2004 and was good but nothing outstanding, pretty big for a Euproean wine buts needs more time. However have to tell this story.
Went to visit the Torres cellar near Barcelona in 2001, next to the Mas la Plana vinyards and the reception and service we received were brilliant. We jumped on a train from Barcelona, got of the train and couldn't get a taxi. When we did it was an E class Merc so we turned up on our own behind two organised coach tours from Sweden in this Mercedes looking slightly conspicuos!
Instead of telling us they were busy the marketing manager came out, sat us in the front of their little cellar train and gave us a peronal tour in English followed by a lift back to the train station and then ended up on the train with us back to Barcelona. Some of the best customer service I've ever had - should drink more of their wine really!

Tasting. tough wine to assess because it is very dense and backward today. Leather and earth dominate a fairly rustic character, but lots of power throughout. Blend of traditional Catalan grapes - Monastrell, Garro, Samso and Xarel-lo.
