  • From little known but well regarded Western Australia, this Cab-Merlot blend follows suit with the popular Bordeaux style blends of the region. When perfectly paired, each varietal brings its strengths forward and helps to cover the shortcomings of the other. In this case, however, I’m not certain the balance was quite right. Though a decent enough wine to sip, I found it leaned far to the fruity side with notes ranging from cranberry and raspberry through to dark cherry and currant. Licorice, herbs, and pepper fought to provide a counterpoint but never quite got there; the oak aging seemed to overpower things a bit as well with very strong vanilla on the palate. There was a strange, slightly chemical note – perhaps (hopefully!) just in this bottle. Overall, there was plenty of potential here but the follow through was a bit lacking and the intrigue fell short.
