  • Boerne wine club - New York: A little scary seeing "Champagne" on the label. I thought that practice was outlawed by ATF.

That said, this is soundly made, but seems to have some odd foxy flavors without some of the easy charm of other New York sparklers.

  • Cheap, as one can guess from its label, this traditional method brut from NY State sells for $5.99. Straw color with persistent bubbles. The nose shows off ripe apple and pear. Medium bodied, crisp with a tiny hint of sweetness. Grapey palate, it reminds me of some Hubba Bubba chewing gums. Perhaps there is some Concord grape blended here. Lemon and apple are also on the palate, but any flavor vanishes as soon as you swallow it.

  • Ouch, not so good. I’ve passed by this wine for a couple of years at my local wine store and was always curious considering its low price and enthusiastic merchant review. Starts off with some nice small bubbles. Unfortunately, that’s about the last superlative I can muster. The nose is simply awful, it’s even difficult to describe. Astringent taste, hints of pear but far from enjoyable. Short finish, thankfully. Interestingly, this sparkling wine is actually labeled as “Champagne,” while a tiny note states “secondary fermentation before bottling.” I was never expecting Méthod Champenoise, but there’s no reason why the label needs to be so schizophrenic. I wasn’t expecting much from a $2.49/split… and that’s exactly what I got. I would not even recommend this for mixing. Even at $5/bottle this isn’t worth it, just spend a couple more dollars to get a bottle of Cristalino or Freixenet if you’re looking for a cheap but drinkable bubbly. Well, at least the bubbles looked nice. Tasting note from two consistent 187ml splits consumed on two separate evenings.
