January 2024 Northern Rhone Dinner: Possibly flawed. When we first opened it, it was definitely aromatically more reticent on the nose with the palate being more austere, darker, much more savory, and brooding. I actually liked it, but when it was in the decanter for a couple of hours and people re-visited, the palate seemed to be blown out by the alcohol.
I had wine fall apart before with too much air, but this declined in a way I never experienced before. I’m not sure whether it was a case of re-visiting the '09 after having a ton of other wines; too much time in the decanter causing the fruit and other elements on the palate to zero out; or just a flawed bottle. I really have no clue. Interesting experience and still glad I tried it, especially in comparison with the '11, which was a totally different wine.

Decanted over a three our period. This is my fist bottle of "nice" wine I've consumed from my own collection and I experienced an array of emotions while drinking it, primarily that I wish I had a dozen cases of it. It was light in acidity and alcohol, medium in body and sweetness. Incredible flavors of spice and tobacco, cherries and strawberries. This was just an absolute beautiful bottle of wine.

Pleasant enough and certainly enjoyable, but few of the layers of richness and spice I would ever expect by this age. Easy to enjoy, but nobody could say anything they found exciting here.

"The mind is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Chicago, IL): A phenomenally good bottle of Bénetière, at least for my palate. There's a concentrated intensity on the palate that makes me think of small, shot berries. Gorgeously aromatic black fruit, that's not over the top with regards to the ripeness at all. Intense and tannic with an entrancing spice note, this is a wine that has plenty of room for improvement with age.

Floral, ripe and delicate. Very pretty!
