  • Well, these have been pretty hit or miss over the years and 6 bottles, with the not so goods showing tired, stewed fruits and other oxidative notes, so I didn't have high hopes for this last bottle, but thankfully we seem to be in surprisingly good shape tonight for beef and bean taco Tuesday.

Bottom corner of the cork broke off on retraction, and there's some definite sludge in the bottom of the decanted bottle, but the juice is showing well in the glass. Deep garnet color. Smells like black and dark red fruits, tobacco, eucalyptus, orange peel, fennel, dried spice drawer, and graphite. Some definite complexity here. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of black cherry, plum, cassis, orange peel, lemon, black tea, and minerals. Solid bottle to end on.

  • Spoiled. Vinegar. Bummer.

  • Had to revisit this today just to see. Well, it's definitely drinking better than yesterday's bottle—a hint of VA but far, far less; could possibly go unnoticed if I weren't already looking for it. Funky, earthy nose, with dark and dark red fruits, dried spices, cedar, and black tea that's maybe not so fresh. Medium body, acid, and finish, with a light carbonic tingle, integrated tannins, and flavors of dark and dark red fruits, black tea, orange peel, and minerals. Still gonna say drink up if you got 'em; for sure on the down slope.

  • This bottle showed over the hill with dried fruits and other oxidative suggestions, along with earth and funk, and notable VA on each new pour (secondary fermentation in bottle?), which thankfully mostly subsided as it aired out, but not entirely. This was not a good showing, and I'm not too stoked about having 3 more to go at this point. I won't score this, but it'd probably be in the 70s.

  • Much better than the last showing for me, which was back in 2012. Dense ruby coloring to the rim. Strong aromas of freshly tilled earth, green and jalapeño pepper, and dark and dark red fruits. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of tart dark red fruits, along with some earthiness and minerality. Interestingly, each new pour from the bottled showed a touch of VA, but always blew off quickly. Much more enjoyable effort at this point.
