Italy Tasting: Medium ruby color. Nose of red berries, some animalic notes (leather, bacon) and the "typical" Aglianico aromatics of minerals (think "lava stone") and a hint of smoke. Unfortunately, on the palate it kind of misses the mark. There is mouth-coatingly high tannin that's definitely on the dry side. There is also a medium-high acidity adding freshness, all in a medium-full body. It's relatively long and the aromatics are interesting, but I just can't get over the masses of dry tannins. It also seems to be a little over-extracted.

15 popular Italian Grape Varieties Tasting (with pirates): During a "Top 15 Italian grape varieties" tasting, grape Aglianico. Medium-deep ruby. Expressive nose of red berries with strong mineralic, meaty and smoky tones, good complexity. Slight oxidative note unfortunately. On the palate medium-full bodied with strong, drying tannins. I think the tannins were not fully ripe, too drying.

A nice wine, improved with age, took a good 40 minutes after uncorked to start opening
