4th Chicago Steak Out (Otis' house): Tasted blind at the 4th Chicago Steak Out. Finished tied for 9th among the 18 wines. Not sure who brought it. I liked the 2002 vintage of this wine better. Very Zinlike. Fruity with notes of cherry, oak, smoke and plum. A concentrated and sweet wine. Full bodied with some alcohol on the finish. 88 points.

Steak Out (Otis'): Label: snake. Opens with a hot alcoholic note, followed by spice, pepper, plum and lavender notes. Flavors of brambly red and dark fruit, a touch acidic and in need of food. 88+ pts. Easy to pick this out as a Zin. My #10 overall wotn.

While there were many good components including rich, dark berry flavors, high viscosity, and lots of spice , the high alcohol, jamminess, and rough edges made this not as enjoyable as I had hoped for. To me this wine is somewhat overdone in almost every aspect - especially the richness, alcohol and viscosity. I tend to prefer zins such as Ridge, Rafanelli, Seghesio, etc. which seem a bit less extracted and more elegant (if there is such a thing with zinfandel). I think this is a wine that you will either like a lot, or dislike a lot.

Great wine. 2 hours in decanter removed all tannins and most of the alcohol. Left with lots of fruit and spice; everything you want in a Zin. Highly recommended.

Somewhat mute nose of zinberry fruits, but the palate more than made-up for it. Coffee and licorice on the front with very restrained brambly fruit at the mid-palate. There was some heat on the finish early-on, but that seemed to blow-off after about an hour. Very elegant Zin.
