Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • {screwcap, 13.4%} Holding on better than the 2010 Butcher's Hill from the other night. This has a low-key, aging nose of copmosty leaves and gently rotting strawberries. Tannins are very low-level and unobtrusive; there's a little fizz of acid remaining - the wine sits pleasantly but narrowly towards the front palate. It's very pleasant, but even though it's nearly medium-bodied in weight, it's very lightly-constructed, with a fairly transient presence along the palate. Rather short finish - disappointingly so, for this wine seems to otherwise have a lot going for it. It's just a bit, well..., simple. Objectively quite lovely to drink, so the criticisms are probably harsh, but this feels like greatness could have been within grasp somehow. On this tasting, should hold for a few years yet, but I'm not certain there's anywhere to go.

  • {screwcap, 13.6%} Mostly garnet, with a touch of orange around the rim. Sweetly decaying compost fruits initially, with soft dusty tannins and matched, gentle acid. Light-ish bodied, dry, with plenty of vestigal red fruit and compost-y leaf flavours. Not over-oaked, or otherwise misshapen. Still, it does fade away a bit on the finish; it tastes very pleasant but lacks the intensity and drive to last more than a puff of brief memory. Much less impressive than the 2011 from the other night; that was a surprise. Drink up.

  • Derwent & Coal Valley wineries; 4/20/2011-4/21/2011 (Hobart, Tasmania): {screwcap, 136.%, A$35} A youthful plummy, fruity nose still gives a hint of sap; it’s not just a fruit drink. Light on the oak, but with a decent acid spine, the tight palate offers bright cherry fruit; ripe, but with a touch of stalk. Medium tannins, medium-weight and with a medium length finish, it’s a decent pinot that should blossom with a bit of age.
