Cellar Raid (Extra Space, Singapore): An enjoyable Volnay. This bottle was quite the ugly duckling that turned into a (moderately) graceful swan between the first pour and the last sip. It had a terribly stinky nose at first, all barnyard, band-aid and cheese rolled up into a funk that all but covered-up deeper notes of dark fruit and earth. Very thankfully, the funk tones swirled away to some extent with time to reveal rather more pleasant aromas dark cherry and cola, earthy mineral, and just the tiniest floral hint notes. Likewise, the palate was all surly and very woody at the start, needing some 15-20 minutes in the glass to opening up into sweeter notes of dried cherries and blackberries, spiked with a touch of chocolate and spice. These were big, robust flavours, but they were balanced by some pretty fresh acidity and well supported by a structur of powdery tannins. Over even more time in the glass, more meaty, earthier components emerged alongside the fruit to give the wine a lush, mushroomy, forest floor character, with a nice floral note that floated up at the finish. A bit on the rustic side I thought, but that may be more about the vintage and the terroir than the maker. It was otherwise a nice wine, just ripe for the drinking.
