  • 50/50 PN/C. Wines from 2016 & 2017 with a mixture of malo and non-malo fermentation, 30% reserve wines from barrels. Disgorged June 2021, dosage 2g/l.

This is very austere and a bit aggressive on first opening, but it opens up very nicely indeed after perhaps 30-45 minutes air and continues to improve over the following hour. My score is based on that, not when first opened.

The nose becomes quite forward and with quite some complexity: brioche, cream, citrus, green apples. The palate follows and it is nicely balanced and not at all as austere as some wines at this dosage. There are some hints of minerals, and the finish is rather clean and moreish (with grapefruity citrus).

Overall this is an excellent fizz, which really rewards the patience to leave it for an hour after opening (I guess decanting may work also). At the ~US$33 that I paid this is a big repeat buy.

  • Clean, crisp, a bit of lemon, bit yeasty. Pleasant and a good value at the price.

  • Pleasant, clean, a bit yeasty. Not a great sparkler by any means, but good value for the money.

  • Quite deep green-tinted lemon color. Clean, focused and refreshing nose with rather light aromas of lemony citrus fruits, steely minerality and some fresh apples with only a hint of toasty autolysis in the background. Light-bodied, sharp and focused on the palate with flavors of ripe citrus fruits and green apples, steely minerality, some grapefruit pith, a little floral complexity and a hint of toasty autolysis. Bright, racy acidity. Crisp, tightly-knit and long finish with bright flavors of ripe citrus fruits, pithy grapefruits and green apples with a hint of apple peel bitterness.

A bright, clean and focused Champagne with more emphasis on the purity and structure than on autolytic complexity and weight. Terrific balance. In its current state this is a wonderful gastronomic food wine for entrées, but perhaps a bit too austere a wine for toasting or meditative purposes. However, I can imagine that with 3-5 extra years in a cellar will give this wine some welcome additional nutty complexity and richness. Priced according to its quality at 39,90€.
