  • Amazingly, this bottle not only held together for eleven years, but was actually quite good. My oldest Newton Chard, I had neglected this bottle for far too long. I was worried that it was over the hill, but that we certainly not the case. I suspect it was much better four years ago, but still pretty darn good. After two hours, the nose showed vibrant citrus and lemon peel with a remarkably well integrated oak component. The oak was seamless. Rich and luscious in the mouth, thick and viscous, but the finish was very clean and pure, perhaps with a tad bit of smoky tartness that marred the finish. That said, the Newton did not really pick up any new notes with aging, I think it’s pretty well as it was when it was young, but a little more mature, integrated and restrained. The only other CA chard that I’ve tasted that has done so well at this age is Kistler.
