  • My first experience with a Turley from this era and this much age (I have mostly '12s and younger in my cellar), this was a recent bargain auction purchase for ~$20/bottle all in. Tasted alongside the '98 Duarte, both were in great shape for 20+ year old zin, with youthful purple color and abundant fruit and little heat. This Tofanelli had the black fruited, peppery, briary character that I prefer in zinfandel, while the Duarte was more dusty and red-fruited. Both are terrific examples of how even high-alcohol zin can age well.

  • Cork had the thinnest leak to top. Color showing some age. This was great with barbecued baby back ribs. This is dense and alcoholic but fully resolved. Not sure that I could do it alone, but also not anything that will go better with my Carolina style Bbque.

  • Slightly earthy aromas with a hint of burnt matches. Tasted dark chocolate and coffee flavors, maybe some dark cherry. Not terribly fruity, but good none the less. Not my favorite zin from Turley, but hey, it's still a Turley.

  • Not really anything left in this one. Alcohol was present but a little too much earthy flavor and a complete lack of fruit.

  • I sort of wish I had more bottles of this, but alas, this is my last one. The community said 2000-2007 drinkability, but I have to say that here we are in late 2009, and this thing came out of the bottle a little medicinal and possibly over the hill, I thought. But over 30 min, it opened up to reveal a deep nose of blackberries, cherries, chocolate, wood, and slight tobacco...all well balanced. On the tongue, fairly soft but still some bite...overall good mouth feel and perhaps too strong for the chicken & pasta pairing but not bad.
