Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Scoring a wine like this objectively is nearly impossible, although I really liked it. This is a deep golden color, with a very fine, but light mousse and is replete with aged notes. There is a slight red berry note that makes me think this is pinot dominant. There is a meyer lemon, ginger and baked apple profile, but this wine is completely driven my massive yeasty, brioche, biscuit, whole bakery notes. This is a master class in autolysis. Spicy notes make me think this was barrel fermented. Fitting with the profile, you really get the patina of age with a hefty dose of hazelnut driven autolytic notes. People who are looking for a crisp blanc de blanc will hate this, to the point of probably not finishing the glass. Lovers of Sherry and Vin Jaune will want every bottle they can get their hands on. Given the labeling, I think they may have forced themselves to make a "Millennium" edition of their Champagne, but this probably lacks the objective quality and gravitas of the Cuveé Louis (which I truly love)... but is also only $50. This is a wine nerd wine, maybe an aperitif at an Orange Wine tasting. In a strange Jamon Iberico with Sherry vein, I would like to try this with a fatty salmon, which might be dumb since Jamon Iberico now seems so obvious.

With a couple hours the berry notes became more pronounced and the bread dialed back slightly, so insert your own opinions about the virtues of decanting Champagne. While opinionated in style, this is a pretty complex wine for $50.
