Neutral pale green color. Very slightly (but not distractingly) reductive nose with aromas of flint smoke and matchstick, some white currant, a little bit of currant leaf and a hint of gooseberry. Very "fumé", indeed. The wine is dry, crisp and intense on the palate with flavors of flint smoke, wood spice, grassy greenness, gooseberries, some creamy oak, a little bit of golden currant and an overarching nuance of aromatic herbal greenness. The wine is very focused and structured with its racy acidity. The finish is dry and crisp with very sharp and vibrant flavors of lemony citrus fruits, borderline unripe green apples, some grassy character, a little bit of creaminess and smoke, but no noticeable oak.
A surprisingly balanced and well-made Fumé Blanc that actually tastes "fumé" i.e. "smoked", not just Sauvignon Blanc drenched in oak. The probably some of the oak character has integrated already, as the wine is approx. 4 years old, but it feels till very youthful and vibrant, so I can imagine it will hold on for many more years in a cellar. Very nice already, but I can imagine it will be even more impressive as the oak integrates even more and the tertiary characteristics start to emerge. A positive surprise.
