  • 13.5% alcohol. M, CF, CS with a decrease by a factor 3 each time (do the maths). The cork is above average in length but very soft; minimal wine penetration. Decanted for an hour. Dark colour with minimal fading and no bricking at the rim.
The nose has an enticing enough mix of fresh and cooked dark fruit with no undue oak. Surprisingly firm in the mouth, bordering on green at times, but better that than soupiness. As a result of the vintage (I assume), this wine sits between two stools, lacking both the easy charm and opulence of St Emilion Merlot and the stern elegance of Médoc Cabernet.
Compared to the Léoville-B 99 that I had yesterday (another supposed off year), the present wine suffers cruelly from a lack of breed.
Might improve with further bottle age, but only up to a point.

  • 13.5% alcohol. M 70%, CF 25%, CS 5% in the vineyard. Good long cork with minimal wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. The colour is deep with barely a sign of ageing at the edge of the rim.
The nose is more restrained out of the glass than it was out of the bottle at the opening stage; still pleasant and refined, but understated with a mixture of red and black berries. The mouth is also restrained with ripe red berries; good grip and noticeable residual tannins in the finish. Not your typical right bank Bordeaux.
Not as exuberantly modern as I remember it from previous encounters, and probably better as a result, if less immediately seductive. Maybe a shorter decanting the next time to try and strike a happy medium between the two experiences (did not decant the last time).

  • 13.5% alcohol. Opened at the last minute as a replacement for a De Pez 2000 that had gone the vinegar way; so no decanting and served cooler than ideal. Good long dense cork with no wine penetration. Dark colour with no sign of ageing. The nose is rich and plummy, with dark fruit aromas and some confectionery notes. The mouth is in the same vein of dark fruit tending to pruney, confectionery even more present; definite minty flavours and a very good balance thanks to excellent acidity.
A success without a doubt, even though the vintage seems to be generally despised, especially on the right bank.
A repeat purchase, for the rare occasions when I am in the mood for this soft modernist style of Bordeaux; I must admit that I enjoyed this one thoroughly. I must also pay tribute to the wine for showing so well after such a rough treatment. Good red wine, and Bordeaux in particular, is much more robust that what many people think.

  • Medium/deep ruby core, pale ruby rim. Sweet plum fruit on nose, some red berry notes, vanilla. Sweet plum fruit core on mid-palate, decent depth, medium + acidity, nice rounded tannins. A good length finish with some attractive savoury character. Young but approachable, should improve however. Excellent.
