  • In Bolgheri I also had a 2006 Guado de' Gemoli. I wondered about why there were lots of wines with "Guado" in their name in this area. Turns out this means "ford" (as in a relatively shallow place to cross a river) and there are a number of small rivers in this fairly flat area around Bolgheri. Guado de' Gemoli turns out to be a Bolgheri Superiore red wine from the estate next door to Ornellaia. It is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot according to the website of Giovanni Chiappini, the producer. I has a medium dark ruby red color and a nose of dark, ripe currants and blackberries. These fruits are also found among the tastes although there are also a good dose of dry tannnins that coat the tongue, but not aggressively. Nice!

I had this wine at La Taverna del Pittore in Bolgheri. It was warm enough to eat dinner outside in the evening, although with a sweater and jacket. Supper was quite simple with a big green salad and maltagliata pasta (literally "badly cut pasta") with a pheasant and mushroom ragu. Delicious. The pasta looks like odd shaped sheets of pasta 2 or 3 inches wide.
