  • Fruity nose with a hint of chocolate. Starts great on the palate, but fades out quickly. Like a Cola, wonderful taste, but really no lasting impression.

  • Dark red opaque color with a touch of chestnut maroon. Initially a lot of pungent, almost sweaty rusticity in the nose that covers up everything else - I'm not sure if this scent is off-putting or interesting. However, after a while notes of liquorice, sweet prunes, eucalyptus and ripe cherries emerge. There is also some chocolatey oakiness to it with mocha notes. Expansive taste has initially a strong, sweet chocolate character, that opens up to reveal notes of sweet cherries, vanilla, leather and black pepper. There is quite much of oak, but the wine is pretty weak on the tannin side. In the mouth the wine feels velvety, but also very heavy due to pretty low acidity. However, I must note that this is a voluptuous Chilean without those overtly jammy notes and how the oak isn't overdone - a pretty rare a thing. Oak and baking spice in the nuanced finish which is, however, backfired with some alcoholic heat and a bit too sweet, overripe fruit.

Tara•Pakay is one of the best Chileans I've tasted so far, but it still isn't that special or different compared to those Chileans around 10-20€. This one is a classy and powerful red, but not worth its price (46,90€) by a long shot. With more elegant and well-balanced structure and more age I would understand the price, but now this painfully young and unbalanced wine is way overpriced. Tarapacá gives aging potential to this wine around 15-20 years, but it sounds really too much to me, considering the low acid and tannin levels in this wine.

In a nutshell: this is a stylish, powerful red and one of the best Chileans I've tasted, but it still is too heavy, almost flabby, and unoriginal to be worth the price. Horrible QPR.
