This was awful. Smoky to the point of being like campfire. Roasted fruits and more campfire smoke on the palate. Something must be wrong with this bottle as the last 3 bottles have been nothing like this.
Clear dark garnet core - still youthful. Clean nose of smoke, earth, charcoal and a touch of cherry. Would definitely have picked this as a SA wine but was concerned about the taste. Shouldn't have as it showed bright cherry and red fruit flavours along with the smoke and some spice. No earthiness on the palate - med acid, body, tannin and medium plus alcohol (not off putting).
The finish was quite long - medium and there was good spice along with the fruit continuing.
Tasty - will be interesting to see where this goes in a couple of years. Can drink now with pleasure. Had with cedar plank sockeye salmon - worked.

Bill's Monthly Lunch - November 2011 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – Lighter red in colour. Spicy nose that had me guessing Oregon pinot with restrained raspberry fruit notes as well. While I didn’t think the nose could be from Cali, the palate could be with slightly riper fruit and a more forward approach than the nose. Light to medium body with solid acidity and good length. This wine does a great job of balancing new world fruit with old world structure and maintains the pinot delicacy that’s so often lost on many new world pinots. Drinking well already but a few years lying sideways could bring out even more complexity. Excellent.
