This wine is a monster. It pours inky black, with a nose of sweet blackberry liqueur. The palate is very fruit driven, again I get blackberry, with some smoke and pepper. Although my taste is changing over the years, I still have an appreciation for these wines, and the best versions ability to be "balanced". This one clocks in at 15.9% abv and is virtually undetectable...impressive. That said, it is a little monolithic and not as interesting as some of the other Epoch bottlings, for instance I prefer the earthy complexity that the Mourvedre adds to the Authenticity. Still in great condition and should drink well for another 3-5 years.

This is a good wine that is likely approaching the end of its drinking window. It still displays a very beautiful dark purple right out of the bottle but the slight shortcomings become apparent immediately after. The nose features a very fruit forward combination of blue and black fruits, classic Syrah, with judicious oak and just a bit of earthy element to round it out. But I felt the combination of fruit and tannin (minimal) was out balance and like so many other fruit dominated wines, this becomes a bit one dimensional eleven years on. If you like his genre of central coast GSM (which I do very much) then this bottle will please but they haven’t figured out how to balance out the nice fruit to make it more durable and approachable over time.

Aromas of plums, mocha, black olives and black cherries. Tastes carry juicy fruits of plums, cherries, and finishes with fresh raspberries. Supported by mild tannins. Just superb.

Mature Paso Syrah. Savory dark-cherry fruit, with black olives and a hint of leather. Lush and resolved, with softened tannins and nice structure.

Very dark fruit, still pretty primary. Typical Paso syrah characteristics.
