MMD Tour 2022 Tasting. St. Regis Hotel (St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco): Nose of black berry, cranberry, allspice, plum, and mocha, same on the palate, medium/big body, very tasty, at peak, mouth filling fruit, complex, easy to sip and savor, showing well today, will easily hold another seven years, long. long, lovely finish and wonderful aftertaste.

Very intense and powerful nose of prunes, cherry jam, milk chocolate, violet and licorice. Smooth, syrupy palate of fig, raisins and caramel. Acidity is low meaning this has a very sweet attack. Lovely long warm finish of nutmeg, pepper and a touch of mint. Very dense, brooding port that is so powerful despite nearly 40 years of bottle age - I feel this might need another 40 to become really magnificent.

Ramos Pinto Vintage Port Vertical (P81): Dark plum and violets with a touch of coffee. It is fresh and "clean" and nicely developed. Long and spice aftertaste. A great wine!

Decanted for six hours, consumed over two days. The cork was in good shape and came out in one piece. The wine was dark ruby in colour and offered plum, blackberry, cranberry, chocolate, spices, cinnamon, clove and anchovies on the nose. On the palate the wine showed plum, blackberry, black currant, chocolate, cinnamon, clove, charcoal, tobacco and tea, with medium to medium-plus acidity, fine, medium-plus tannin, some heat from the alcohol and good length. The full-bodied, medium-sweet, medium-complex Port was smooth and reasonably balanced. The alcohol was better integrated and the wine smoother and more balanced on day two. Overall, a very enjoyable Port, particularly on day two, but it still left me longing for more complexity. It might pair well with blue cheeses.
