  • I bought this bottle from the winery a few months before it shuttered for good. Sorry to see this producer go, because I enjoyed the wines and have good memories of visiting and tasting with my family. Anyway, this bottles has held up nicely. Light purple color. Smells of juicy blackberries and plums, the fruit smells like it’s fresh and vibrant, not confectionary, and I get a good dose of cracked pepper, smoke and bitter chocolate. A bold, full wine but there’s a refreshing tartness to this wine. The tannins have smoothed out a bit but still structured well. Tart black cherries, some blueberry notes, along with a delicious blend of dark chocolate, smoked meat, cracked pepper. On day two, the wine gets really silky and shows more violet and bacon elements. Threw a big sediment, so a decant is a good idea. Wish I had another bottle. From a 2,100-foot vineyard in El Dorado.

  • Synapse Winery Tasting (Placerville, CA): Just as good as the Diffusion Syrah, but this 100% Syrah shows darker, richer themes. Aromas of plums, dense blackberries, dark chocolate and molasses. Plush and creamy texture on the palate, but firm tannins solidify the structure. Gobs of rich blueberry and blackberry fruit coat the palate, backed up by pepper, loam and mocha. I kept thinking of Walla Walla Syrah while drinking this, because it has that density and purity of fruit. Ridiculously long finish. The 2007 shows a much more bombastic style than the 2008, but I can't help but love this wine. Long time ahead of it, too.
