  • 88: Lovely opaque violet color with slow, thick legs. The bouquet opens over an hour, starting with strong black fruit but slowly shifting to modest earthy notes. The palate follows similar form. Black currant base with blackberry peaks dominate, but notes of vanilla and oak begin to manifest as the wine opens. Aeration did not seem to make much difference here. Very drinkable with low astringency and modest tannins. The wine has enough body to stand up to grilled steak with a citrus-pepper sauce, but it is not the most complex Cabernet Sauvignon I've had, and it leaves me wanting more than it can give. There is light sediment, but not enough to worry about filtering it. That said, the cork was fully intact but relatively loose, or at least not as tightly sealed as I would expect; no signs of leakage in or out, but I'm glad I didn't wait longer to open this bottle.
