Wine was bought on release in California then brought to Europe. Always stored in temperature controlled cellars. Cork fell apart as we opened the wine, but otherwise seal seemed to be in good shape. A good friend's comment as I handed him a glass was "wow". The wine's nose was intense, smoky, bacony, with cherry and berry notes but so so Burgundian with a touch of something else. On the mouth, the wine was lovely, smooth, elegant, with tons of cherry fruit, exotic spices and that classic tea-like smokiness one gets in some great Burgundies. The finish coated the mouth and left one wanting more and reaching for the glass again to experience the wine again. It was hard to believe this was 23 years old! It was Burgundy with something extra. The elegance and poise of a great Burgundy Grand Cru but with the intensity of a new world wine. This wine is a great Pinot noir and has nothing to fear from great burgundy (I remember a side by side tasting of Rousseau Chambertin 94 and Isabelle 94, and the Isabelle simply blew away the Rousseau, as much as I love Burgundy, I have to note that this wine hasdit all - what a great wine experience).

1.5L. Wonderful, rich, earthy pinot. Another great wine from ABC. Still had plenty of tannin and opened up nicely with decanting. 4/00
