  • Broke down and bought a Coravin and decided my other bottle of this '95 should be used as a test subject. TN from the second pour I coravined out.

This bottle is not as fruity as the first bottle, although it is not decanted for as long in the glass. Nose of raisins, dried cherries, cocoa, orange peel, and a hint of leather. Medium bodied, on the dry side for a port, and just as hollow as I remember the palate being. A green herbal medicinal palate with a bit of dried assorted red fruits mixed in. Finish long with heavily roasted nuts, leather, figs, and black pepper.

Next time I pour a glass I am going to let it decant for the 4-5 hours and hope the fruits pop out a bit more.

  • Red, White and a Rarity (Sammamish, Washington): Dark amber in color. Dark fruit on the nose with some herbal notes underneath. Very smooth flavor profile with well-balanced red fruit on the long finish.

  • Decanted for 5 hours. Medium red-brick in color. Simple but mature nose of dried and stewed cherries, fig, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, and a hint of leather. Medium bodied with just a hair above moderate acidity and on the dry side for a VP. Palate is rather hollow and restrained. I don’t get much until the finish – figs, dates, dried blueberries, and stewed cherries. Light grippy and lush tannins bring in burst of fresh oak notes into the finish. Lengthy finish of black pepper, cedar, tobacco, licorice, figs, dates, and cherries.

There is an interesting dichotomy going on. The primary flavors have aged nicely, but the secondary remained fresh and vibrant. I think this is drinking in a great place right now. This may not be a port that will wow you, but it is very competent and well executed.

  • Drank this over a three week period. Got thicker & more luscious as it aerated. Nice nutty notes.
Heavy sediment for the final glass last night required a strainer.

  • Extremely dark red color with slightest transparency at the edge. Aromas of plum, blueberry, cherry, and dried mission fig. Palate shows remnants of the medicinal notes prior bottles have shown and this is to expectations and has proven to be worth the wait, despite doubts along the way. Solid but not more than that. Drink or hold.
