(43% ABV. Notes based on the initial/neck pour from a bottle opened today). APPEARANCE: Medium deep brown with dark copper hue. NOSE: Over toasted bread, sweet oak, caramel, dark treacle, dried fruits (dates, figs, some raisins), oloroso sherry, over brewed black tea, hints of black cardamom and nutmeg. Very nice. (88-89p) TASTE: The arrival is sweet, almost sugary. On the mid palate some sweetness, nice (old) oak notes, over brewed black tea with sugar and dried fruits. Quite rich and fairly concentrated. Unfortunately it is semi sweet and the sweetening is very noticeable. (82p, would probably have been around 86-88p without the masking sugar) FINISH: Very similar to what I found on the mid palate plus a little black pepper. Unfortunately the sweetness comes in the way of the taste experience, again. (82p, would have been 84-85p) OVERALL: This is a high quality and very tasty demerara rum with (and at) a good age, at a good price. Unfortunately it is sweetened, with between 20g and 40g per litre, depending on the source. The sweetening clearly is to the detriment of the drinking experience. It simply masks (partly or fully) so many of the interesting taste elements which are here. A few drops of water does make it appear slightly less sweet. It is a real shame to age a quality product for over 15 years in quality casks only to mask it with sugar. May this practice end sooner rather than later, please. My TOTAL SCORE would probably have been in the high 80s range (87-88p) had this been unsweetened and “unmasked”. With all the sugar however, masking so much of what we should have been able to access in the mouth, I cannot give it more than 84 points.

I will likely rebuy this. Very good as a sipper. Sweet without stickiness or cloying, and lots of character and complexity for the buck.
