Mmm. Along with Muga, this is my go-to Rioja rose, and a highlight of my summer. No less this year. On first opening, it was a bit closed, aromatically (a bit of alcohol on the aroma and palate). Once it got going it was super minerally, with a bit of lemon (and lemon pith), some green apple, and some other various and sundry fruits and herbs. This was more about the mineral, balanced acid, and tension than about fruit. Buy!

In a two bottle runoff, with the other being a 2011 Dragon Cuvee Prestige, this was the winner. Similar overall in style, with florals on the nose and a relatively delicate palate, this one comes across as just slightly sweeter and more rounded. Perhaps not quite the overt energy of the Dragon, this still has plenty of verve.

(13%) 50% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha and 10% Viura – Damn! Through two bottles already? I originally came across this one at a tasting at Arlequin Wines here in San Francisco when my notes read: “floral, nice mineral, “Provencial”, crisp and refreshing”. After a couple bottles I would add “fresh strawberries and great acidity” to that descriptor. This seems to be relatively widely available and at $15 retail is worthy of consideration. Pair with summer (and winter too!)
Wine Geek Notes: Made from 60 year old vines; Fermented in stainless steel; Imported by De Maison Selections

Good, crisp rosé. Dry and quaffable, though maybe a touch astringent on the mid-palate.
