  • Found this in the back of the wine cellar and hoped against hope that it still might have something left to offer. Alas, no. It wasn't a disjointed sugary alcoholic low-acid mess like some Paso wines from this era have turned into, but the aromas and flavors were unappealing -- roasted fruit that had turned bitter. Mat's wines had their exuberant charms when drunk young, but don't seem to have been built for the long haul.

  • PHMG WAG: Syrahs from around the World (The Lyon's Tree House): Despite buying this near release from Winex, and no cellar issues, it seemed a bit over the hill tonight. The blackberry jam, mocha, smokin' oak, and some stone notes are nice but don't last long. Drink up.

  • Rich and dense, but is doing a good job finding restraint in a big bodied feller. I didn't expect that this wine would be able to develop many tertiary characteristics (not to mention anything much secondary) but it did over the course of a five hour tasting. Initially it was all blackberry and bittersweet chocolate, and fortunately the oak was more rewarding than overbearing, but as it opened up I started to enjoy the black pepper spices and the shroomy undertones that remind me more of coastal cali syrahs then those grown inland. The tannins were very plush as well, and not at all detracting. I'm glad I waited a few years to open this one up and enjoy; I would hold off opening if you only have one bottle so you can see for yourself how the wine develops with age, and also to allow the power of the fruit to abate. This is the kind of wine the Dude would probably drink if he did, as it "abides" quite nicely indeed.

  • With the grief Matt’s wines have taken over the past few months - including grief from me - I particularly wanted to report on this experience. The wine was beautiful. No oxidation whatsoever. In fact, the wine is very young. Sure it has loads of oak, vanilla and brown sugar. It’s a big wine, no doubt. But it also delivers rhubarb, eucalyptus, blackberry, black fruits and licorice. A heavy shadow of sediment on the shoulder and in the final pours of wine. In all, a very nice effort. 14.5% alc. With restaurant style chips and avocado dip during the second half of the Super Bowl. Recommended.

  • Reddish purple color. Took about 2 h in the glass to reveal the aromatics, better the next day (simple vacuvin storage). Nose reveals sweet blackberry compote, meat juices, black olive paste, tar and smoky oak. The palate follows through with sweet blackberry jam, charcuterie, smoke, minerals on an acidic finish. The wine seems a bit confused with a mix of ripe Cal/Aussie Syrah fruit and framed with bright acidity of a Cote-Rotie.
