  • A day tasting in the Applegate Valley (Applegate Valley, Oregon): This wine spends 28 months in barrel and 1 year in bottle before release. My host just kept talking this wine up over and over again, saying how everyone from around knows they make the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the Applegate Valley. The aromas are fairly smooth, but light and soft. The palate texture is smooth, soft, and creamy, but it's also equally smooth and mellow when it comes to flavor. There's moderate tannic clout, with some notes of dark fruit, and no heaviness on the palate, but also not much depth. Tart, spicy, but smooth finish. Fairly puckering, but I really wished there was more depth of flavor here. Not sure if this is the best Cab Sauv. from down here, but it's certainly not all that compelling.

  • This Applegate Valley Cabernet has big shoes to fill. The prior vintages of this wine are some of the wine geeks favorite Southern Oregon Cabernets. The wine is dark ruby with a nose of dark fruit, forest floor, charcoal and vanilla. On the palate this Cabernet is full bodied, fruit forward with a tocuh of chocolate leading into a smooth middle and quite firm tannic finish. This is a delightful big red wine now and will be even better if you can wait for it.
