Decanted 90 mins. Dark ruby. Medium round and velvety, Luigi D'Alessandro's 2010 Borgo Syrah Cortona displays pure, concentrated aromas of berries, plums, mint, and violets. Blindfolded, I might mistake the bouquet for a Brunello. In the mouth however, I could just as easily mistake it for a northern Rhone, perhaps a Crozes Hermitage. Not a powerhouse, but elegant and balanced, with medium acidity and a long, clean, peppery finish. The tannins have smoothed noticeably from only a year ago. QPR. Drink or hold. (13.5% abv)

An attractive, semi-opaque crimson in color. Offers subdued aromas of dark berries, earth and flowers on the nose, along with quite a bit of heat. Full-bodied and very rich. Lots of tangy plum and blackberry fruit character here. Noticeably hollow on the mid-palate, but there's good length to the bone-dry finish, which features subtle notes of licorice, espresso and mineral. Tight and tannic, this should benefit from several years in the cellar. A very nice entry-level Cortona Syrah from D'Alessandro. A good value at around $14. 50+5+11+15+7=88
