Screw-cap. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours at Zach's wedding. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of citrus lemon-lime, sea salt minerality, wet stones minerality, smoky gun-flint. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, salty saline minerals, smokey flinty stones minerality. Medium finish. Good quality. Certainly commendable for minerality from the New World. Restrained but lacking on the finish. Time to drink up. 100% barrel fermented, natural yeast with 20% new oak. About 20 year old vines.

Ata Rangi make the best pinot in New Zealand? Wrong! They make some of the best chardonnay in New Zealand! Their pinots are superb, too, no doubt. And at this price point it's certainly better value than their Crimson Pinot Noir. This chardonnay is a match for many of the Reserve chardonnays in Australia and New Zealand. Nice balanced nose with citrus, stone fruit, bakery and roasted nuts sharing the stage. On the palate, it glides in gently with soft acidity and generous, but subtle fruit at first. This elegance is then joined as power on the back palate and long on the after taste.

Hint of lime, fig and peach. A lighter style with a bit of oak. Good drinking.
