  • Suprisingly youthful upon opening - classic pinot with heaps of fresh red berries. With time in decanter the wine gains weight and smoothens out showing earthy notes and sense of wet forest floor. Still fresh. Nice acidity, textured tannins and good lenght with a bit of dryness in the finish. Really lovely. Wish I had more as no doubt this should evolve further with cellaring.

  • Burgundy 2012 Day 1: Dinner at Hotel Centre Meursault (Hotel Centre, Meursault): This was rather disappointing for a 1999 1er Cru, let alone one from the usually reliable stable of Jadot wines. I suspect that it must have been made from negociant-bought grapes as Jadot does not seemed to have produced a Marconnets in other years. Although I might be wrong, this would explain why the standard was well below par and why the production stopped after 1999. I must say that it had very pretty nose, with sweet strawberry scents laced with perfumy violets and a nice whiff of spice and earth. Lovely really. The palate, while a pleasant enough tipple, was where the disappointment was. While is had bright, yummy flavours of strawberries seasoned with some earth and spice, it was also thin and unconvincing, petering away into a rather lean, hardish finish with a bittersweet twist. A very simple wine - I would have expected this of a Bourgogne regional wine, or maybe a middling village, certainly not a 1er Cru. Not great, and about time to drink up too.
