  • What a historic wine! Batar is usually a blend of predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, but because this vintage was a challenging one (wet and cold, with some erratic temperature changes in the summer), the blend was switched. I believe there is only 10% of Chardy in this. For a producer that is known for its Chianti, this white is a real standout edition. Some say that this is reminiscent of Burgundy, but we keep hearing that and I don't find the resemblance here in any way. This is pure Italian charm.

Evolved and enjoyably nuanced nose with aromas of beeswax, some wizened yellow apple, a little bit of apricot and honeydew melon. The wine is broad, textural and full-bodied. A combo of sweet fruit and intense salinity. The overall feel is ripe and pretty big - even a bit heavy - but the wine doesn't come across as clumsy or blowzy, thanks to its pretty high acidity. Showing its age, but there is still a good deal of youthful, vibrant fruit left, making me think that this might continue to age gracefully for years more.

  • Dinner at the White House (The White House, Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong): Medium gold. Nose is slightly pongy socks and burnt butterscotch. Quite rich. Palate is medium acidity, burnt caramel and burnt butterscotch, somewhat carmelised. Still quite high alcohol which is a bit too prominent. Tending towards Oloroso sherry. Past its prime. We didn't finish the bottle.
