  • Bottle 184. This is an interesting bottle given the sharecropping history, as Bouchard once owned the grapes but Comte Liger-Belair made the wine. At 20 years of age, the bottle pours an opaque dark ruby color with medium legs. On the nose, the wine yields a weighty, concentrated bouquet, evidence of prime pedigree in viniculture and remarkable extraction. Primarily tertiary, notes of of dark fruits, cherries, earthy mulch, black tea, tobacco, smoked meats and saddled leather are present. On the palate, the wine glides with incredible finesse and balance. Tannins are well-integrated and the acidity is firmly kept in balance to maintain vivacity. Again, judging from the texture, the balance is on point. Flavors of smoked meats, leather, stewed cherries, kirsch, licorice, preserved plums and tobacco are all in proportionate balance. Finish is smoky and spicy with just the slightest reminder of fruit as the wine exits. This juice is as interesting as it is cerebral. And this is precisely why I love Burgundy so much.

  • Last bottle. Popped and poured. Better with about 30 minutes of air, this is a fine, straightforward wine that shows good fruit and a nice, soft finish. Good first wine, and good with food, but I would be drinking now. A-

  • This was with no decant and marginal stemware, but showed a bit dry and overall just not as impressive as my last note. B+?

  • Drank side by side the '89. Medium red color, showing much more evolved and expressive fruit than the '89. Easy to drink, with an elegant finish. Drink now. A-
