Glass: Zalto Universal Bought at release. Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, medium lemon golden color. Clean, beautiful intense and complex nose. Fresh lime, orange peel, herbs, apricot, spices. Very dense, deep and multi-layered. Unfortunately, the palate cannot keep up with the beautiful nose. The wine is not dry (neither legal nor sensorial) and a best example for the German term “feinherb”. It gives this wine rather broad shoulders and makes it chubby and a bit flabby. It has extract, depth and a very good balance, but it lacks energy, acidity and precision. 13% abv. Lots of ripe stone fruit, good mineral core. Length is good, probably a tiny bit hot. Still young, but I doubt that it will improve over time. Typical 2011 issue IMHO. So drink now or within the next 2-3 years, preferably with food. 90-92

A controversial wine - MFW scored this 96 in 2012, Richard Jennings gave it a score of 87. In its youth this was undeniably impressive, but since then time has caught up with many dry Rieslings from 2011, and this Altenberg Alte Reben is no exception. It is more energetic than Von Othegraven's rendition also tasted today, but this too is a soft and slightly flabby wine, with a lack of structure, precision and length. Let's face it: these 2011's did not age well. Drink up.

Ripe apple, citrus marmalade, yellow stonefruit, wet stone and a hint of apricot on the ripe nose. The medium-bodied palate continues with the same ingredients, and brings in medium, stony mineral acidity. Long finish, tapering towards stones. Although this is technically dry, there is some fruitiness or residual sugar, making this lean more towards an off-dry feeling. The ripe year is felt in the ripeness of the fruit and somewhat milder acidity, but the structure manages to just keep things well together. Drink or hold.

Serious wine, quite similar to my previous notes. Unfortunately slightly corked, hence no further description.
