  • Nothing special. Maybe past it’s prime. Flat.

  • Big success for this bottle of village-level appellation, from the great (though early-maturing) year of 2009. Red roses, violets and wisteria; stewed raspberries and a faint bit of orange; hint of cinnamon and clove; slightly salty and plenty of other minerals. For some reason Vosne-Romanees always make me envision a thick robe of purple velvet, and this one exemplifies. Don't remember the price, but it wasn't a fortune, though you wouldn't be disappointed if you had paid one. Manuel Olivier has a charming, vine-bedecked tasting room at their operation in a tiny hamlet above Nuits-St-George. They plied us with every wine on the list, for three hours. We made it worth their while, up to and including their Clos de Vougeot. But, tasting this 'basic' Vosne-Romanee for the first time since we were there, we don't see the need to hope that the tops-of-the-line will be any better. Load up on this if you come across it in a shop. Ready to drink now. 2010 likely to be good too.

  • Thin and lifeless. Hope the other bottles in cellar are better.
