Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 85.2 points

  • Tasted as part of the annual Şarap Tutkunları tasting in İzmir where I was one of the guests along with Aslı Odman as well as the members of the tasting circle; İsa Bal MS, Ayhan Güleyen, İlker Özdemir and Arif Öncü. The following note and the relevant score belongs to me only.
Oak driven both on the nose and the palate with pure, youthful berry aromas behind. Admittedly this has the best overall balance and fruit quality in the Kalecik Karası tasting.

  • Vinkara’s own vineyards are in Kalecik though the company also depends on fruit sourced from other regions on long term contracts with the growers. Their vineyards are planted mostly to Kalecik Karası, indigenous to the area.
During a recent visit to the vineyards I was impressed by their ongoing work on the variety, including continious clone selection and different vineyard treatments involving leaf pruning and training systems and monitoring their influence on the wines. They have multi capacity fermentation tanks that enables this practice.
Mahzen is the oaked version where their best fruit stays for 14 months in oak. Darker than the Doruk with a garnet shade the nose, despite an overbearing cedar core shows ripe strawberry fruit along with candy floss. A better overall balance on the palate again compared to the Doruk from the 2012 vintage, this combines fine grained tannins, medium palate weight and a silky texture.

  • Ruby with brick highlights, darker and more vivid compared to the Doruk Kalecik Karası 2011, the unoaked version. Having spent 14 months in oak and a further 6 in the bottle the nose displays aromas of vanilla and cinnamon upfront followed by notes of cedar and some red fruit only discerned after the oak. More palate weight than the Doruk with some warmth throughout the experience, dominance of oak again but somehow a better wine than the unoaked version maybe due to the use of better grapes for the cuvee.

  • Light ruby color, almost pink.
Vegetal nose with green peppers, capsicum, smoke and notes of agave.
Palate is light bodied with lowish acidity, light tannins and cherry and smoke flavors.
Wood influence perceptible. Aromatic light bodied wine with spice and crisp fruit.
Kalecik Karasi has similar aromatics to Pinot Noir, this one is more like a Syrah dominated
Cotes du Rhone or St. Joseph.
