  • ON the nose there are aromas of black cherry, berry, plum and prune with vanilla, plenty of alcohol heat lending peppery spice. This is backed by leather, biscuit and bloody meat. On the palate it's sweetly berried with slightly jarring acidity adjustment and silky tannins. there is a fair bit of alcohol heat on the finish. Needs the steak that I'm going to accompany it with.

  • A little confused about this one. 7 hours in the decanter and it never really opened up, closed, dusty, muted. Heartbroken....
Gut feeling is it still has the legs to go for a quite a few more years yet. Might try and find another to double check.

  • Dinner with Jay Hack (Les clos, San Francisco): Beautiful nose with red fruit, wonderful spice throughout; palate is medium bodied, wonderful concentration of red fruit, spice, medium tannin, medium acidity; medium-long finish. Superbly balanced, easy to drink, very, very nice. Still quite youthful. 92-94

  • Starting off quite funky and taking its time to open up, the wine presented itself different than I remembered it from out last encounter. Back in June 2012 the wine was wide open, rich, deep and dark. But this time it was even better: Fresh, red fruits, a lot of cherries, ethereal freshness of herbs and pinewood, eucalypt, some licorice and wet earth. Pure perfection on the palate with density, freshness and elegance. Mostly driven by dark fruit, fresh herbs and spices, the wine is still youthful and structured for a long future. Finishes long and focused with dark berries, some spiciness as well as sweetness. An exceptional wine at an early stage of its life with finesse, depth and complexity!

  • Deep red with a black core. Lighter than the pure Shiraz.
Deeply scented red berries, some cherry pip, with some earthy dark spice and a hint of leather. Quite refined, oak not evident.
Elegant mouthfeel but finishes strongly with firm acidity and notable but not aggressive tannins. Youthful intensity, quite taught, has many years ahead to open up. Not a lot of development but the mataro earthiness adds some complexity to the Shiraz which would otherwise have a pure rather monolithic profile at this early stage. Has a Rhonish quality to it with the dark spice and silky palate, sweet red berry fruit intensity marks it as Oz though, and that's no bad thing! Drinking beautifully.
