This wine came straight from the cellar and was quite cold. Despite the chill, it was immediately apparent that this was a serious wine. Great depth on the bise. A bit of pine resin ended up giving way to very dark and dense fruit. Quite lush in the mouth with with brightness that makes a dense wine feel weightless. Much better than other recent '97s, and better than another bottle of this same wine earlier in the year. Will hold for a very long time, but is giving now with appropriate air.
1997 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Tragically corked. This would have otherwise rounded up a trio of Musignies very nicely. It certainly had a great mouthfeel to it, very elegant and pure, with a good depth and fruit and a lovely velvety structured, but all that was scalped, with cradboardy TCA notes on the nose and a abrupt cut on the finish. Real pity.
New Year at Bristol w/Jadots (The Bristol, Chicago): Dark sweet perfumed stems, rich heady raspberry aromas. Black berry, spice, kirsch. Black dust. Long & rich. Masculine. Quite sophisticated. Juicy texture. Long finish. In a good place with many years to go. Jadot nailed it in 1997. 94
Jadot Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Best showing I've ever had for this great wine. Red and black cherry aromas with great meaty spice. Incredible balance with lots of everything you hope for in Grand Cru Burgundy, everything in great balance. Sensational structure and textures for a 1997.
