On the plus side the colour is a good healthy ruby, there is plenty of sweet fruit and it is mid weight. An average vintage at 46 years old is showing well. All it lacks is a third dimension, more complexity and depth plus some grip. Its all a bit too soft and easy to really appreciate.

1977 and 1963 Vintage Ports... (Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington, New Zealand): Easy to approach wine, that offers the style and class of mature vintage port, if not a heaven-storming level of complexity. Extraordinarily pale. Some VA, dusty aromas of cocoa, red fruits and citrus peel. Good level of complexity, and a well-modulated finish. In a line up of ten ports, I picked this wine correctly (single blind).

The 1975 vintage ports are characterised as being light bodied, but the best are elegant and a pleasure to drink. After a run of poor vintages and under threat of nationalisation the port producers announced a general declaration. The wines are now fully mature. However, if well cellared, the best wines will last for some years. The good '75's will grow old gracefully and are in good shape. They are elegant fruity and well balanced but not big.
