  • Light, citrus based honey and white orchard fruits on the nose. Right around medium bodied, maybe just shy of it (11.5% ABV) with good overall balance. Opened at 50F, warming to 55F and the flavor profile evolved from more citrus based to an interesting mix of orchard fruit, citrus and honey. Peach, pear and apple upfront, but overlaid with both a honey note (adding richness) and a tart citrus note (providing contrast). Good depth and roundness through the middle as well as very nicely tart acidity, lemon and lime. Finishes with good integration and lingering mineral qualities. Doesn't have quite the laser-cut acidity or the mid-body depth of the Ravines Argetsinger, but showing extremely well for a nearly eight year old Finger Lakes riesling. Showed better slightly warmer and also once it had been open for awhile. I'd expected to find a wine that was hanging on after a good life. Instead, given where the fruit and acidity are today, this wine still has a few years ahead of it. Given two hours open and a serving temperature around 55F or so, the balance between the various elements really shines.

  • Surprising what a year can do for this wine, considering having tasted the 2010 right before this. The 2009 shows a hint of age and honeyed fruit flavors on the nose, peach juice and ripe red apples. Nicely textured on the palate, this is made in a sweeter style to the 2010 and it shows. The sweetness here is nicely balanced with the acidity and flavor intensity, and all are nicely integrated. The fruit here hangs out for a long time on both the palate and finish. The acidity rises as the wine is swallowed, freshening the palate and extending the finish. Initially it shows apple fruit, white pear and as the wine is swallowed, a nice spike of lime juice followed by stone fruitiness. This is really damn tasty. The honeyed flavors on the nose don't seem to translate to the palate, but that's ok. This is showing really nice right now.
