  • This was had side by side with a 2001 Maiden - it was interesting to compare and contrast these bottlings. On opening, the Abreu had a darker/more brooding nose than the Maiden. With air, it gained more notes of cocoa and had more sweetness come out on the palate (surprisingly). It would also be bottle variation, but it would be hard to guess that this is a 2004 given how much fruit is left. The tannins feel resolved at this point, but following this bottle through the meal was quite dynamic in terms of the changes on the nose and on the palate. Even 2 hours later though - there was still some residual heat on the bottle so I think a healthy decant is still warranted for this wine.

EDIT: On the second night, I think I understand a little better why this wine is so well received here. This opened up significantly and lightened up quite a lot, with more notes of vanilla coming through on the nose and a more lifted palate. It no longer felt as much of the dark brooding wine from the first night. What an incredible wine.

  • Parcel from a confidential production of 2400 bottles. The plot is located between the St Helena and Howell Mountain AVAs, in a setting in the middle of the woods perched at an altitude of 250m.

Deep nose full of freshness, lavender, spices and raspberry.

Mouth still very young and overflowing with freshness, the acidity plays like an engine to constantly revive a rich and deep juice. It is a very elegant wine, something which, along with the freshness, is worth mentioning in California. The depth of the palate is magnificent, the aromas of lavender and raspberries intertwine, all sprinkled with sweet spices and graphite. Graphite and cedar will also be dominant in the second half of the palate. The tannins are integrated, the whole is still young, I would have given it 10 years younger blind. We are at the level of a beautiful Grand Cru Classé from Bordeaux. Beautiful finish oscillating between lavender and graphite over a long, vibrant length.

Great Napa Valley, David Abreu’s wines impress me every time.

  • Another great bottle after a 2 hour double decant, still deep ruby with no brick; near perfection & at peak with a likely long plateau, drink or hold

  • An epic wine. Still youthful, minimal bricking. Lots of thoughts come to mind when I drank this, deep, rich, smooth, integrated, pure class, layered, still young and I could go on. On the nose, complicating notes of blackberry, graphite, black raspberry, and cassis. The palate is smooth and integrated, but with still some tannin to give it more life ahead. This is an absolutely beautiful wine, I just wish it weren't so darn expensive. Delicious!

  • The English language lacks a word to describe the first sip. There were things that took my breath away with greater speed and ferocity as a young man, but for this stage of life, wow, just wow.

Perfect balance between fruit, tannins, and everything else. I’m not that good with the palate, so I’ll leave the description of what’s going on to those better than me. But each taste fills the mouth and stays there a ridiculous amount of time. My taste buds felt like one of those brain scans where the whole thing lights up like the 4th of July.

This is the rare juice that will make you want to get on a plane, fly to Napa Valley, search for Mr. Abreu and shake his hand. Don’t drink this within your normal four walls. This is meant to be drunk somewhere grand: Outdoors with a view, a vast landscape, a starry night, a lit up city at night. And don’t sip alone. Share this with people special to you, who love you and you love back.

    Magic in a bottle.
