  • Blind tasted. Nose is not bad--initially damp moss, forest floor, trace of rose. Good viscosity. Mouth is sweeter than the nose indicates. Wine is chewy, a bit flabby with medium-low acidity and not much structure. A little sticky and syrupy. Some artificial sweetness. Not much minerality, earth, heat, etc. Two-dimensional. A plasticky quality on the nose and palate that is characteristic of inexpensive NW wines for me. Not terrible but would not repeat.

  • Nice mix of fruit, cherry, dark plum, currant. Spice, but not peppery spice. The Viognier gives it a nice floral nose and softness. I love this type of Aussie blend.

  • Saturday Tasting at The Gourmet Shop Columbia, SC 10/4/2014 (The Gourmet Shop, Columbia, SC): It is not just the co-fermentation of 5% Viognier that makes this wine so approachable and interesting, there is some pretty inspired effort with the grape growing and wine making of the Shiraz as well. Designed to be palate friendly, the 14.5% alcohol somehow seamlessly intermingles with the other flavor and aroma characteristics. Deep ruby color. The nose is fruity and spicy, with a hint of violets. Both red and black fruits like cherry and blackberry. Very ripe and full bodied, but capably balanced with acid and tannin.

  • This a ringer for a Cote Rotie Shiraz thanks to its dollop (5%) of Viognier. Aged partly in steel and partly in used oak barrels, imparting only a hint of oak. The color is ruby, medium (+). The nose is clean, with black fruit, ripe stone fruit, mint, tobacco, a hint of barnyard and sweet spice. The nose is medium (+) in intensity and is developing. The palate is dry, crisp and tight, with medium (+) acidity, medium to medium (+) alcohol (14.5%) and medium (+) tannins. The palate is consistent with the nose and also has some cedar, smoke. This is a well-balanced, medium-bodied wine, with medium (+) flavor intensity and a medium-long finish, which tastes lighter and fresher than its numbers would indicate. It is drinking well now but is likely to improve with a little bottle age. It was surprisingly fresh after being open a week. A very good value. WS 90.
