Napa Trip (Napa Valley, CA): Deep spicy red, black fruit, somewhat hidden and young; smooth blackberry fruit, full bodied, very balanced; nice medium length finish. Excellent balance. Needs time. 89-90

Mauve at the center, bright magenta at the rim. Elegant and approachable on the nose, combining a lifted floral character of violet and rose with juicy, sweet dark fruit aromas of blackberry, baked blueberry, and plum. There are also baking spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as more savory hints of anise, clove, smoke, and pork fat, and a very faint whiff of stemmy underbrush/tree bark, which I really like. Also a touch of oak showing some vanilla creme—but subtle. It’s definitely on the easygoing, feminine side of syrah, but there is enough complexity and enough savory touches to keep it from becoming overly sweet or simple. A really nice nose. Follows through very well on the palate and actually turns more to the masculine side. There’s a very nice smoky, meaty bite to it, with firm, textured tannins in support, and the spiciness comes through with a dusting of black pepper and cinnamon. The fruit is still there, especially on the juicy, squeaky clean finish, where it mingles with the spice, some fresh herb, and a bit of oak. If I have a nit to pick, it would be that I could use just a little more acid and maybe a tiny bit less oak and/or micro-ox (if they use it), as it’s just maybe a tiny bit on the flat side in terms of mouthfeel. But this is a smashing bottle and the best US wine I’ve had in a while. Maybe one of the best US reds I’ve ever had at this price point. Bravo. Delicious now, but it seems to me that it will improve over the next few years.

Lean and mean. Blue and a little black fruit take second fiddle to the pepper and red meat. A tight, acidic and lower alcohol package. Great QPR and I could drink this all night.

Funky black berry on the nose. Tart blackberry on the palate. Little funk, some meat. Very nice.
