Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Mid shoulder ullage. Cork extracted via Durand virtually intact. Bottle upright for weeks, but not decanted for sediment. 13% alcohol. Dark brown color with ever so feint reddening at the rim. Smelled fortified. To note, I have zero experience with a red of any varietal with this much age. Bottle was a wedding gift in 1985, and towed around for 15 years without proper care; then last 16 in my cellar. Who knows where it was the previous 48 years!? I never expected anything but vinegar, so to find it "drinkable" was a revelation (or as Kapon would say, nearly mature. Bwaaahaha!). On the nose Madeira and on the palate port, indicating the presumed heat/storage damage. Followed in the glass almost 3 hours without any change, not that any was expected. Opened with the providers of the bottle and the long ago owners of the shop where it originated. They didn't even recall giving it to us, nor anything about how the bottle got to their shelf. Interesting wine experience.
