I first reviewed well over three years ago, back in July 2014, and since then I've thought I may have over-rated it. Is it really a 90? Is it really that good? A wine for just $16 (in Ontario)? (My review then: "Simply astonishing value for such an excellent wine; deep, rich, and luscious, with awesome aromas of olive, pine, cedar, and loads of purple fruit, and complexity in the mouth to back it all up; solid tannic structure that benefits from some aeration; serious but approachable, and overall a fantastic effort.") Well, this second bottle confirmed it. It's excellent wine, certainly in the 89-90 range, but the integration and harmony are even better now -- the 3+ years really did help, and it holds up even at 11+ years of age, which is pretty remarkable for a such an inexpensive wine but also a testament to what is possible with the Mencía grape, as well as to the immense value to be found in Bierzo generally, as in so many of Spain's less-heralded wine-producing regions.

It's been 3 yrs since my last bottle and this was a terrific showing. Drinking well with a PnP, but even better after 3-4 hours of slow ox. Balanced, complex, robust, fragrant, tangy. Super value.

Could be the time and place, or a 'gone-to-sleep' point in its evolution but it didn't wow me as much this time out. Subtle but complex nose; dark flavours; gripping finish. Still very good value though...check back in 5+ years. 3/5

Medium body with black cherry, barnyard, leather, blackberry, and forest floor. Smooth. Fresh acidity. Drinking very well.

Nose of plumb and anise. Flavour is balanced and structured with anise, cherry and chocolate followed by spices.
