L.2020. Evolved, expressive nose with aromas of roses and blood orange, last year's strawberry syrup and liquorice. Fully dry with nicely developed flavours, soft mousse and a salty finish - extremely apetizing!

Lunch with Gaggan Anand (Mandala Club, Singapore): How unusual - a sparkling Rose from Austria. This was quite decent. The nose had a bit of sulphur on it, but that blew off to show a little yeast and some rather indistinct white fruit notes which brought to mind jambu ayer (water apples) and lentils. The palate was slightly more interesting - lots of mineral, and plenty of bright, chewy acidity gave a nice foil to an otherwise simple mouthful - again reminiscent of water apples and lentils with a hint of florals - all couched in a soft mousse. An interesting one. Not half bad.

Medium pink hue. Could pass for a light red wine. I do love Blauer, although it is not to everyone’s taste. Fearsome acid with little stuffing... but those aromas! Wild strawberry, nettles, tart pie cherry, blood orange, grapefruit, hibiscus, rose petal, rhubarb or sorrel (?), a slight yogurt lactic tang. Many classic rose notes, it turns out. This producer has a knack for coaxing all that is possible out of this mercurial grape.
