  • Very dark garnet. Thick, meaty nose of milk chocolate and blackberries. smooth blackberry notes on the front palate, tart energy with raspberry notes on the finish, sweet milk chocolate background. Everything a Zinfandel should of be.

  • Out of a group of about 10 wines, this one was definitely the "thickest" of them all and also the darkest. This one had dark baking spices, black fruits, fig jam, and earth. This is a field-blended "Un-Bordeaux Blend" consisting of Zin, PS, Carignane, Alicante, and Mourvedre (something tells me I'm missing one here). I was very impressed, but I think I liked the 2012 a little bit more when it was opened a few months ago. Still had a lot of depth to it. I was quite impressed by this wine, more from the standpoint that it just still seemed like it had a tad bit of heat to it from the moment it came off the bat so to speak, yet still had a lot of depth and complexity. I think this one probably won't settle down until 2019, and think it can drink to 2022. I completely agree with the 2013-2022 drinking window.

  • For the most part, I've stayed away from 2011 Napa wines, as I've had to taste my fair share of thin, underripe 2011s that still carry the high price tag. Many of these 2011 wines have a funky finish. However, this wine was a pleasant exception to the 2011 rule. While not as full-bodied as other Mixed Black vintages, this wine still has a pleasant nose and some nice fruit on the mid-palate. The finish is gentle and leaves you wanting more. I tip my hat to the Edge Hill/Rudd winemaker for being one of the few winemakers to make quality wine in a terrible year.
