What a difference a day makes! Same bottle, same setting (oh well), but an extra day of air. The wine opened up beautifully, delivering all the aromas and taste I was searching for on Day 1. So I recommend either decanting or storing for another year or two to truly appreciate it.

Oftentimes when great expectations go unmet the experience colors one's otherwise positive views.
Syrah is one of my favorite varietals, and Scherrer is one of my preferred winemakers. But this didn't bottle didn't jump out at me. Nothing wrong with it, certainly. But having enjoyed Fred's other reds, I was hoping for the "wow" factor that didn't materialize.
Now in fairness I think we'd all agree that the setting and circumstances of a wine tasting influences one's opinions. Oftentimes you'll hear someone say that the best bottle of wine he ever had was at a swish private party (the Prince and Princess of such and such were there!), in an elegant setting (a 200 year-old chateau or palace), with knowledgeable connoisseurs...i.e the perfect ambiance for wine and food appreciation.
Not wanting to wait for the right moment, I had this wine with stuffed peppers in my kitchen with no guests beside me. Not a favorable food pairing or setting for sure!
I have another bottle I'll eventually open in a more favorable environment and will report back. I expect it'll score better then
