  • Grown at 1,800 feet in the Virginia Piedmont on a plot described as a “unique site” (aren’t they all? Isn’t that the nature of real estate?) this has been billed as the best Pinot Noir of Virginia - the best site for its production, the most meticulous vineyard and the best pinot noir wine ever produced in Virginia. Maybe so. But if you like your Pinot Noir with cherry, cola, vanilla and pine resin this is the Pinot for you. The cherry and cola build (thankfully) once the bottle opens and takes on some air. But as the wine warms, the vanilla and pine resin warm and dominate the wine. Dave McIntyre was wrong about this wine (and I don’t make that statement lightly). This is not a good Pinot Noir. If this is the best that Virginia can do with the grape, then please don’t do it again. As I told one of Virginia’s best wine producers when he took a stab at Pinot Noir, “Bottle this as a Rosé of Pinot and it will sell, but as a red wine, it fails.” Is this better than most - perhaps all - other Virginia Pinot Noirs? Yes, but that is not saying much. At $42/btl, this is a complete waste of money. At $15/btl, this is an “okay” wine. 220 cases made. No sediment. 12.9% alc. With duck cassoulet. Not Recommended.

  • Lean and lithe, with tart cherry fruits and stoney undertone. It feels like it's thinning out, and has a clipped somewhat astringent midpalate.

  • A lean, lithe quaffer, with strawberry and red licorice notes and some jammy apricot undertones. It reminds me of a Willamette pinot in some ways, especially with its jamminess and spices. The tannins are still quite persistent, and it has a nice acidic backbone. It loosened up after the third day in bottle and started to show its longterm promise.

  • Ankida Ridge Vineyards 2012 Pinot Noir (SRP $42): Transparent ruby in color, this Pinot Noir shows restraint and ‘old-world’ sensibility; offering delicate, yet lifted aromas and flavors suggestive of fresh black cherries, cranberry, sous-bois, incense spice, and faint floral (perfume) notes. It is relatively sleek in the mouth with textural finesse, marked acidity, and soft, integrated tannins that melt into a pleasantly bright, medium-length finish. The wine is drinking nicely now, though it will be interesting to see what it does with a little more time in the bottle. Approximately 220 cases of this wine were produced, so it may be difficult to find, but it is well worth the effort to seek out. Region: Amherst, Virginia. (Other info: ABV 12.9%, cork enclosure)

  • Virginia Wines at Marcel's (Marcel's - Washington, DC): Light ruby color. Juicy berries on the nose, rhubarb, notes of white pepper and red licorice candy. Bright and fresh on the palate, fine tannins, juicy cherry fruit. Notes of rhubarb, pepper and earth add complexity. Not incredibly deep or profound, but a really solid and promising Virginia Pinot Noir for sure.
